Cotton

Cotton
(Tribute - Poem)

" The Ships from the West bring only disaster and death,
Skilled Traders and Traitors, hell bent on loot and lust.
In the deltas of the twin rivers, where Goddess Annapoorna roamed,
Floods and Famines raved and ravaged and everything was doomed.

The Ryot and the Zamindar - in quandary and equally effected,
The Cow and the Child - listless, lifeless and dead.
The cries for hunger grew louder, with no one to heed,
The thoughts of desperation were heavier, in deed.

Then fighting against his own men, came Sir Cotton,
An Engineer and a General, but more a human being.
In the city of Rajamahendri, a wonder was conceived and done,
A tale of sacrifice and ingenuity, and it was the people who won.

A network of canals and aqueducts, and the Rice bowl became Rice bowl again,
Every family in the region offers the great man a Pinda, his sacrifice is not in vain.
And, in the annals of history, let this inspiring tale be gently told,
Of this engineer and general - but more a human being - the Modern Bhagiratha - Sir Arthur Cotton."
