మిస్సైన ట్రైన్....మిస్సవ్వని లింగరాజ స్వామి దర్శనం

సాయంత్రం 5.45 అవ్తోంది. పూరి బడా దందా (గ్రాండ్ రోడ్) లో రోడ్డు మీద వున్న చిన్న చిన్న షాపులను చుస్తూ Twills దగ్గర ఆగి రాపిడో బైక్ బుక్ చేసుకున్నా రైల్వే స్టేషన్ వరకు. జగన్నాధ స్వామి దర్శనం బాగా జరిగింది. చాలా కాన్ఫిడెంట్ గా పూరి – తిరుపతి ఎక్ష్ప్రెస్స్ 6.40 కి అని ధీమా గా, ట్రైన్ లో తినడానికి దొరుకుతాయి, కానీ, దగ్గర్లో వున్న ఒక వెజిటేరియన్ హోటల్లో వెజ్ బిర్యాని ప్యాక్ చేయించి, పూరి స్టేషన్ బయట అటూ ఇటూ పచార్లు చేశాను. మంచి క్షేత్రము, పైగా పుట్టిన రాష్ట్రం కదా, వదల బుద్ధి అవ్వట్లేదు. అదిగో అప్పుడే కనిపించింది, రోడ్డు మీద ఒక కొట్టు...

చానా పోడ, రసగుల్లా, రసమల్లై, చానా గజా స్వీట్ల కొట్టు. జనం ఎగబడి కొంటున్నారు. సరే, టైం వుంది కదా అని తీరికగా చుస్తూ, ఒక పావు కేజీ చానా పోడ ప్యాక్ చేయిచాను ట్రైన లో స్వాహా చేద్దాం అని. 6.20 అవ్తోంది. దగ్గర లోనే పూరి స్టేషన్ కన్పిస్తోంది. కాస్త పక్క గా వెళితే ఒక చిన్న ఖిల్లీ బడ్డి కనిపించింది. ఎలాగో వచ్చాం కదా, ఇంకా జస్ట్ 20 నిమషాల్లో ఒక 5 నిమషాల్లో  స్టేషన్ కి వెళ్ళిపోవచ్చని ధీమా గా ఒక వాటర్ బాటిల్, ఒక మీథా పాన్ (ఖిల్లీ) కట్టించా. పక్కన ఎవరో హిందీ లో Where is my Train app చుస్తూ కంగారు పడుతున్నారు. ‘ఆప్ భీ పూరి తిరుపతి పకడ్నా హైన్ క్యా’ అని మాట కలిపాను. నా మాట విని అప్పటి వరకు సైలెంట్ గా వున్న ఖిల్లీ బడ్డి ఆయన చక్కని శ్రీకాకుళం యాస లో ‘ఏటి బాబు? మీరు పూరి టిరుపతి కా? మరేటి, ముందే చెప్పొచ్చుగా, అది ఎప్పుడో ఎల్లిపొంది అనుకుంటా’ అని అన్నారు. కంగారు గా నేను అప్పుడు Where is my Train app ఓపెన్ చేసి చూసా, ట్రైన్ కరెక్ట్ టైం పూరి లో సాయంత్రం 6.30.  నాకు ఖుర్దా రోడ్ జంక్షన్ నుంచి బుక్ అయ్యింది టికెట్, ఈ ట్రైన్ తదుపరి స్టాప్ అయిన ఖుర్దా రోడ్ జంక్షన్ నుంచి 7.40 కి బయల్దేరుతుంది. పూరి నుంచి ఖుర్దా కి unreserved ticket తీసుకున్నా, 7.40 అనే టైం మాత్రమే రిజిస్టర్ అయ్యింది బుర్రకి, ఆ దెబ్బ తో పూరి లో 6.40 కి బయల్దేరుతుంది అనుకున్నా, అవివేకంగా!

అదిగో అప్పుడే కనిపించింది, రోడ్డు మీద ఒక కొట్టు...

 

చేసేదేమీ లేక, గబా గబా ప్లాట్ఫారం మీదకి పరిగెట్టా, పూరి తిరుపతి ఊసే లేదు. సమయం 6.41. చావు కబురు చల్లగా అన్నట్టు 6.39 కి బయల్దేరింది ట పూరి నుంచి ఆ ట్రైన్. ప్రయాణాలలో ఎప్పుడూ జాగ్రత్త గా వుండే నాకు ఒక ఎదురుదెబ్బ. ఇంత లాంగ్ ట్రైన్ ఎప్పుడూ మిస్ చెయ్యలేదు. తర్వాత రోజు ఉదయమే వెళ్ళాలి ఆఫీసు కి. ఎక్కువ శెలవులు పెట్టలేను కొన్ని పరిస్థితుల దృష్ట్య. స్టేషన్ బయటకి వచ్చి చూసా. రోడ్ మీద వెళితే ఖుర్దా 59 కి.మీ లు. సుమారు 50 నిమిషాలలో వెళ్ళాలి ఇదే ట్రైన్ క్యాచ్ చెయ్యాలి అంటే. పూరి నుంచి నెక్స్ట్ ట్రైన్ వెంటనే లేదు. ఆటో వాళ్ళ తో మాట్లాడి చూశా, ఏమి అర్ధం అవ్వలేదు. 

అప్పుడే స్టేషన్ బయట ఒక కారు బుక్ చేస్కున్న మధ్య వయస్సు దంపతులు భద్రక్ వెళ్ళడానికి సిద్ధంగా వున్నారు, ఆ బండి అతనికి నా పరిస్థితి వివరించి, ఖుర్దా లో దిగబెట్టమన్నాను. అది దారి కాదు, కాస్త deviate అవ్వాలి వారి రూట్ కి. గట్టిగానే అడిగారు, బేరం కుదిరింది. మార్గ మధ్యలో టెన్షన్ పడుతూనే వున్నాను, ఖుర్దా లో ట్రైన్ అందుతుందా లేదా అని. ఇంట్లో మమ్మీ, డాడి కి, విజయవాడ లో మా శ్రీమతి కి ఫోన్ చేసి చెప్పాను పరిస్థితి, కంగారు పడొద్దని, ఎలాగోలా ట్రైన్ క్యాచ్ చేస్తానని, అది మిస్ అయతే, తర్వాత ట్రైన్ కి అయినా వచ్చేస్తానని. Traffic భయంకరంగా వుంది. దానికి తోడు, భద్రక్ వారు పూరి శివార్లలో కాసేపు కారాపి, కాజాలు కొన్నారు. అప్పుడే నాకు జ్ఞానోదయమయింది. ఖుర్దా లో ఈ ట్రైన్ మిస్ అవతానని అర్ధమయ్యింది. ప్రతీ సారి పూరి జగన్నాథుని దర్శిన్చుకున్నప్పుడు భువనేశ్వర్ లింగరాజ స్వామిని కుడా దర్శించుకోవడం అలవాటు. ఈ సారి కుదరలేదు, ప్లాన్ చెయ్యలేదు, అది ఒక వెలితి లా అనిపించింది. సర్లే, ఎలాగో ట్రైన్ మిస్ అవ్తాను, ఇంక బాధ ఎందుకు, ఒక సారి దర్శించుకుందాం అని నిర్ణయించుకున్నాను. పర్సు తేలికపడబోతోంది. మనస్సు కూడా తేలికపడింది.

లింగారాజ శివాలయం సింహద్వారం వద్ద 

నా ఈ కొత్త ఆలోచన ని వెంటనే ఫోన్ లో ఇంట్లో వాళ్ళకి, శ్రీమతి కి చెప్పి, కారాయనకి చెప్పి, ఎలాగో వారికి దారే కాబట్టి భువనేశ్వర్ లో దిమ్పెయ్యమన్నాను. ఖుర్దా స్టేషన్ దాటేసరికి రాత్రి 8.20 అయ్యింది. నేను క్యాచ్ చేయదలచిన పూరి తిరుపతి 7.56 కి ఖుర్దా నుండి ఆంధ్ర వైపు పరుగులు పెడుతూ వెళ్ళిపోయింది. కాసేపు కారాయన తో భద్రక్ గురించి, అక్కడే వున్న భిత్రకనిక జాతీయ పార్క్ గురించి మాట్లాడాను, మొసళ్ళకు బాగా ఫేమస్. Anaconda సినేమ అక్కడే తీసారన్నట్టు వుంటుంది ట.  ఓ కంట రాజమహేంద్రవరం వైపు వెళ్ళే ట్రైన్లను ఆన్లైన్ లో గమనిస్తూనే వున్నాను. విచిత్రమేమిటంటే, ఆ లైన్లో పూరి తిరుపతి తప్ప అన్ని లేట్ లో నే నడుస్తున్నాయి. 

భువనేశ్వర్ భారుండా సెంటర్ లో ఆగేసరికి రాత్రి 9.00 దాటింది. ఒక ఆటో ని మాట్లాడుకుని లింగరాజ మందిరం వైపు పరుగులు పెట్టాం. గుడి తెరిచి వుంటుందో లేదో తెలీదు ఆ సమయంలో. రెండు చోట్ల రోడ్ బ్లాకు! చిరాకు వస్తోంది. చివరకి గుడి దగ్గరకి వచ్చేసరికి 9.35 కావొస్తోంది. పక్కనే ఆటో పార్క్ చేసి, ఆటో ఆయన పరుగు పరుగున సింహ ద్వారం వైపు వెళ్లారు, నా కోసం గుడి తెరిచి వుందో లేదో చూడడానికి. ఆశ్చర్యం గా తెరిచి వుంది. లగేజి ఆటో లో వుంచేసి, మొబైల్ / చెప్పుల కౌంటర్ మూసేసిన కారణంగా, అక్కడ డ్యూటీ లో వున్న పోలీసులను రిక్వెస్ట్ చేసి, వారి వద్ద మొబైల్ పెట్టి, పరుగు పరుగున లోపలకి వెళ్లాను.

లింగరాజ మందిరం (Lateral View)

గుడి లో ఎవ్వరు లేరు, ఆ రోజుకు ఆఖరి భక్తుణ్ణి నేనే! 8-9వ శతాబ్దాల లో సోమవంశ గజపతులు కట్టించిన లింగరాజ మందిరం భువనేశ్వర్ లోకెల్లా అత్యంత పెద్దదైన, ప్రతిష్టాత్మకమైన శివాలయం. హరి హరక్షేత్రం, గుప్త కాశి, పార్వతీ దేవి మూలంగా ఇక్కడే కీర్తి-వాసర రాక్షస సంహారం జరిగినది అని, ఏకామ్ర క్షేత్రమని అని ప్రతీతి. భోళా శంకరుడు భళా అని మెచ్చినట్టు గా ప్రసన్నంగా చాల చక్కగా దర్శనం అయ్యింది. లింగరాజ దర్శనం అవ్వకుండా వెనుతిరిగాననే వెలితి పటాపంచాలయ్యింది. కళ్ళు చమర్చాయి. Deula / విమాన శిఖరం చుస్తూ ‘నమస్తే అస్తు భగవన్...’ అని స్మరించుకున్నాను.

తిరిగి ఆటో ఎక్కి, భువనేశ్వర్ స్టేషన్ చేరేసరికి 10.00 అవ్తోంది. 10.11 కల్లా సంత్రగాచ్చి – తిరుపతి సుపర్ఫాస్ట్ వచ్చింది. ఈ లోపు ఆన్లైన్ లో టికెట్ తీసేసా, ఎదురుకుండా ఆగిన బోగి లో ఎక్కేసా. ఒక సైడ్ లోయర్ లో సెటిల్ అయ్యి, టి.టి. గారి కోసం వెయిట్ మొదలెట్టాను. ఈ లోగా, ఆకలి గుర్తుకి వచ్చింది. సంచి లో కాస్త ముద్ద అయిన చానా పోడ సేవించాను.

పూరి శ్రీ క్షేత్రం / జగన్నాథ మందిరం వద్ద 

మొత్తానికి ఒక చిరు సాహాసం. అన్ని సందర్భాలలో అన్ని అనుకునట్టు ప్రణాళిక ప్రకారం జరగవు. పంచతంత్రం ముడు చేపల కథ లో లాగా సందర్భానుసారం సమయస్పూర్తి గా అల్లుకుపోవాలి అని మాట. మిస్సైన ట్రైన్ కంగారు పెట్టినా, మిస్సవ్వని లింగరాజ స్వామి దర్శనం హాయి కలిగించింది.

కొసమెరుపు – నేను మిస్సైన పూరి తిరుపతి తర్వాతి రోజు రాజమహేంద్రవరానికి ఉదయం 9.15 కి చేరింది. నేను తర్వాత ఎక్కిన  సంత్రగాచ్చి – తిరుపతి సుపర్ఫాస్ట్ దానికన్నా తొందరగా 8.52 కే దిమ్పేసింది నన్ను రాజమహేంద్రవరం లో....

Around Sri Kshetra, In awe of the Goddesses of Puri..

Me at Gangeswari Temple, Bayalish Bati, Erabanga - Gop

 

It was the first time that I got into a State Government operated MO bus from Puri to Bhubaneshwar, and after getting down at Gop Bus stop, I reached the scenic and unassuming village of Bayalish Bati, literally meaning the village of forty houses. Away from the hustle and bustle of the Golden Triangle of Odisha tourism, the little village possesses the temple of Maa Gangeshwari Devi, the kul devi of the Eastern Gangas of Kalinga.

The temple seems forgotten, with thick shrubs and creepers making their mark on the Deula. The Eastern Gangas, at their zenith (c.11th-14th Centuries), with stalwart kings like Aanantavarman Chodagangadeva, Langula Narasingha Deba, were responsible for the proliferation and perfection of Kalinga style of Rekhi architecture, with Puri and Konark remaining the greatest examples. A legend refers to Bayalish Bati as a village of architects and sculptors including Sebei Mahapatra, of Konark Sun Temple fame. The temple at this village could have been a prototype of the more famous Sun Temple of Konark. The sculptures and images, including Saptamatrikas, Mithun, and especially Varahi Devi are amazing. 

Barahi Deula, Chaurasi, Lateral View

 

The Varahi Temple / Barahi Deula located in Chaurasi village of Prachi river valley,  located on Nimpada - Katakpur road is another interesting temple. Attributed to Somavamsa Gajapatis of Early 9th Century CE, the main idol in the sanctum santorum is dedicated to Goddess Matsya Varahi, representing Tantricism and Saktism, and is unique. Seated in lalitasana, the divine woman with a boar head and a Kapala and Fish in each hand, invokes awe. The temple itself is planned on Khakhara model, with Sandstone material and  images like Lord Surya, the Sun God driving his seven horsed chariot are arresting. Bhog (Mahaprasada) of Jagannatha Temple is taken to this temple everyday.

 

Inside the Chausath Yogini Temple, Hirapur

 

The Chausath Yogini Temple / Mahamaya Temple, is located 20 Kms away from the capital of Bhubaneshwar, and is another unique, but lesser known masterpiece. Yoginis are mythical, auspicious practicioners of Tantra and Yoga, associated with Sanatana Dharma and Buddhism. This little,  hypaethral, circular shaped shrine is dedicated to the 64 Yoginis (Hence the name Cahusath i.e, 64), with most of the images in a damaged state. Sadly, there is no proper maintenance. Eastern India, since ancient times was a stronghold of Shaktism and Tantricism and this temple is a living proof. This is the oldest Yogini temple in India, dated c.864 CE, commissioned by Queen Hiradevi of Bhouma Dynasty. A famous local legend ascribes to Goddess Durga taking 64 forms to defeat demons and now consecrated as Mahamaya Devi, the main deity of this temple.

It was a fruitful day for me, as I got to offer obeisance to the Goddesses of these iconic temples, and to witness the unsung glory of Kalinga.

Konark and Puri

The Summer is over, or so it seems. Under the benign gaze of the rain bearing clouds, a jam-packed Private buss with very little room to stand took me from Bhubaneshwar's Kaplana Square to Konark Sun Temple, a place that I've wanted to visit for a long time. Public transport is an issue. There are tourist packages by OSTDC,but I decided to go alone, taking my own time to enjoy the monument.  Past the lust green rural terrain of Odisha, via the towns of Nimpada and Gop, finally, I got down at the Bus station of the NAC (Notified Area Committee) of Konark.

Clearly visible from a distance, Konark Sun Temple, the monumental 'Black Pagoda' built by one of the Greatest Kalinga Eastern Ganga Emperors, 'Langula' Narasingha Deva I stands at the centre of this town. An area of 500 meters around this majestic temple, although teeming with little shops and hawkers, is declared as 'Plastic Free Zone'. At the entrance, there is a raised Mandapa called 'Nata Mandir' guarded by two stone-Lions on either side, with beautiful carvings of Odissi and ornamented pillars - a magnificent sight! Beyond this lays the temple - now almost caving in, supported by a large wooden superstructure. Designed as an ornamented chariot of the Sun-God, Lord Surya, and symbolically drawn by stone carved statues of Seven Horses (only 3 can be noticed as of today, the rest are completely destroyed), this temple once had 24 Stone wheels exquisitely carved with 24 spokes each representing 24 hours of a day. Sadly, only one stone wheel is completely undamaged. Towards the right, there are ruins including that of a kitchen.

Interestingly, the original Vimana-Deul of the temple which measured upto a height of 70 metres no longer exists as it was completely destroyed in 1837. In the South west and South east, there are two separate shrines dedicated to Mayadevi (an unkown deity some would associate as Chaya Devi, wife of Lord Surya) and to Vaishanava tradition respectively. A walk around this monument, is spellbinding and brings one close to an era of Kalinga Grandeur - when War Elephants clashed and Maritime trade prospered. Just outside the monument across the road, there is an archeological museum dedicated exclusively to this Sun Temple. It is a must visit - not the case unlike many museums where photography has a separate charge/or is prohibited. It has some wonderful artifacts! A short documentary is shown inside a theatre - I only wished they'd explain more interesting scientific facts about the temple rather than just myths. It was around 8.30 in the morning when I reached here, and it's almost 11.30 by the time I'm done.

The trip from Konark to Puri is very enjoyable. The road runs via the famous Chandrabhaga beach, almost parallel to the Bay of Bengal, criss-crossing the Balukhand-Konark Wild Life Sanctuary. Once again it's a jam packed private buss, but I managed to get a seat. A single main road like a straight line, large and segregated connects the Shree Kshetra (Jagannadh Temple) with the bus-stop. Initially skeptical about how some Pandas mistreat gullible piligrims - all fears found to be false in my case, I had a wonderful experience in the temple. It's a pleasant afternoon, but there is no crowd, as the Rath Yatra is yet to start. There is an element of disorganization, but the architecture, the ambiance, the feel...it's all amazing & perhaps marks one of the finest temples that I've visited. I took the Bhog offering too, and the Bhog (Prasadam) is prepared in the kitchen (said to be one of the largest in the world) within the temple premises supervised by the Annadan Bhog Committee.

As I've returned to Bhubaneshwar, I've only wished I had 1000 eyes (Sahasraksha) like Devendra to properly and prudently appreciate the enormous & elegant Sun Temple of Konark (Kainapara) and the Shree Kshetra!
